Depending on your personal profile you may qualify either under the federal or the Quebec self employed programs. The two programs differ somewhat. In particular the definition of self employment under the Quebec program is wider than under the federal program: professions are not limited to activities related to farming, culture or athletics.

Minimum requirements under the federal program

To apply under the federal self employed program candidates must:

  1. Have at least 2 years experience, within five years preceding the date of application, as a self employed in cultural activities, athletics or farming;
  2. Have the intention and ability to create their own employment in Canada in cultural activities or athletics or purchase and manage a farm in Canada.

Whereas there is no minimum investment level for a self-employed person, they must demonstrate that:

  1. They have been able to support themselves and their family through their talents and would be likely to continue to do so in Canada; and
  2. They have sufficient funds to create an employment opportunity for themselves and maintain themselves and their family members after their immigration.

Examples of persons who may apply under this category include music teachers, painters, illustrators, film makers, freelance journalists as well as people who work behind the scenes, such as choreographers, set designers, coaches and trainers. It also includes persons who perform in the arts and in the world of sport internationally or in their own country at the highest levels in their discipline.
Candidates must show they have sufficient capital, appropriate experience and appropriate skills.

Requirements under the Quebec program

The definition of self employment under the Quebec program is wider than under the federal program: professions are not limited to activities related to farming, culture or athletics.

Under the Quebec program Candidates must:

  • Have two years experience as a self employed in the profession or trade which they intend to practice once in Québec;

  • Have a legally obtained minimum net worth of 100 000 $ Can.

Other requirements

To qualify under either the federal or the Quebec program, candidates must also:

  • Obtain a minimum number of points during selection on the basis of a grid applicable to self employed workers which considers criteria such as their age, level of education, knowledge of Canada’s official languages, work experience;

  • Successfully pass Government of Canada mandated security and medical examinations.
