Faster processing times for student permits under the new Student Direct Stream (SDS)

IRCC announced on June 8, 2018, faster processing times for student permits under the new Student Direct Stream (SDS)

International students in Canada are on the rise, every year more than 490,000 international student choose to study in Canada.

IRCC has improved the International Student Program, creating the Student Direct Stream (SDS) that will benefit citizens from China, India, the Philippines and Vietnam. The SDS will provide an easier and faster service, making it more accessible to obtain a student permit to come to Canada.

To qualify under the SDS, an international student must:

  • Be a legal resident of China, India, the Philippines or Vietnam
  • Have been accepted by an eligible post-secondary Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Provide evidence that they have passed a medical examination before submitting their application
  • Demonstrate the required English or French language abilities
  • Provide proof of payment of the tuition fee for the first year of studies
  • Give evidence of the purchase of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution in the amount of $10,000 CAD.

The SDS does not apply to registration in a language course. International students from China, India, the Philippines or Vietnam, cannot obtain a student permit through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) if they are planning to register and attend a Language course. At Siminca we can help you determine if the SDS is possible for you. Fill out a free online student assessment today and find out how Siminca may help you apply for a student permit under this stream.

The SDS has been created also to complement the Express Entry System, as these students will be better placed to continue on the path to permanent residence after graduating and obtain Canadian citizenship.

IRCC has also announced that they are working to expand SDS to include Kenya and Senegal, and they are aiming with this to attract French speaking international students.

Ask Siminca how we can help you in submitting a complete application and avoid being refused for submitting forms with mistakes or documents that do not comply with IRCC standards.
